When motherhood has no simple timeline

Motherhood can be anticipated, uncertain, difficult to reach, or different from what others expect. Every path deserves care.

Questions about motherhood can arrive everywhere: at dinner, in your feed, at a medical appointment or in a quiet moment when no one else is asking. Sometimes the answer is clear. Sometimes it changes.

More than half of Canadian women aged 20 to 49 had no children in 2024. Work-life balance, housing, finances and access to child care are among the circumstances that can shape family life.

A woman may be planning for motherhood, hoping for it, facing difficulties, feeling uncertain, or living a different path. These experiences do not belong in one neat category, and none should invite assumptions.

Someone may feel clear about her circumstances and still find the subject tender. Another may hope for motherhood while finding questions about timing difficult. A truthful answer can also change as life changes.

A woman’s life is rich and meaningful at every point, whether motherhood is part of it now, later, or never. No single timeline tells the whole story.
